Pricing watches at the pawn counter: what to check first
Short answer: identify the exact model by its reference number, check whether it comes with box and papers, look at its condition and service history, and price it from real sales of the same reference. For expensive watches, an authenticity check by a specialist comes before any loan.
Identify the exact watch
The brand and model name are not enough. Most makers use a reference number, often engraved on the case or printed on the papers, that tells you the exact version: size, material, dial and movement. Price that reference, not the family name.
Box and papers
The original box, warranty card and receipts make a used watch easier to sell and easier to trust. The same watch without them usually sells for less, and the gap grows with the watch's value.
Condition and service
- Scratches on the case and crystal, wear on the bracelet.
- Whether the watch runs, keeps time and the functions work.
- Recent service records, especially for mechanical watches.
- Replaced parts that are not original, which can lower the value a lot.
Authenticity
Counterfeits of popular brands are common and some are convincing. For expensive pieces, the serial and reference numbers, the movement and the details of the dial need an expert's eye. When in doubt, do not lend until it is checked.
Real sales, not list prices
A manufacturer's list price and a dealer's asking price both say little about what a used watch sells for at a pawn shop. Use real recent sales of the same reference, in similar condition, with or without papers.
How PawnMeter helps
The clerk types the brand, model and condition. PawnMeter shows what comparable watches really sold for at participating shops, or says that there are no comparable sales, which for rare pieces is often the honest answer.
PawnMeter: Type the item. PawnMeter shows the resale price and a suggested loan, calculated only from what comparable items really sold for. When there is not enough data, it says so instead of guessing.
