Pricing bicycles and e-bikes at the pawn counter
Short answer: identify the brand, model and year, check the frame and the main components, and for e-bikes check the battery and charger. Record the frame number and ask for proof of ownership. Then price from real recent sales of comparable bikes.
What decides the price
- Brand, model and year. The starting point, as with cars.
- Frame material and size. A frame size that fits fewer riders can be harder to sell.
- Components. Gears, brakes and suspension often matter more than the frame.
- Condition. Wear on the chain, cassette, tyres and brake pads.
E-bikes: the battery is the big question
The battery is the most expensive part to replace. Check that it charges, that the bike runs with assistance, and that the original charger is included. A missing or weak battery lowers the price a lot.
Ownership and the frame number
Bicycles are commonly stolen. Record the frame number, check it against any stolen-bike register used in your country, and ask for a receipt or other proof of ownership, especially for expensive bikes.
Season and storage
Bikes often sell better in spring and summer, and they take space. Both belong in your loan percentage for this category.
How PawnMeter helps
The clerk types the brand, model and condition. PawnMeter shows what comparable bikes really sold for recently at participating shops, or that there are no comparable sales.
PawnMeter: Type the item. PawnMeter shows the resale price and a suggested loan, calculated only from what comparable items really sold for. When there is not enough data, it says so instead of guessing.
