Documents to check before a car pawn loan

Short answer: before lending against a car, make sure the customer owns it and can pledge it, that the identity numbers match the documents, that no finance or legal claim is attached, and that all keys and the main documents are handed over. The price comes after the paperwork.

Ownership and registration

The registration document should be in the customer's name, or the customer should show a document that proves the right to pledge the car. Compare the name with the customer's identity document.

Identity numbers must match

Check that the vehicle identification number on the car matches the one on the documents, and that the number plates match the registration.

Finance and claims

A car bought on finance or leasing may belong to the lender until it is paid off. Use the official registers or checks available in your country to make sure there is no outstanding finance, seizure or theft report.

Keys and documents

Insurance and storage

Decide where the car will be kept during the loan and who insures it. Storage costs and insurance belong in your loan percentage.

Then the price

Only once the paperwork is clear does the valuation matter. Price from real recent sales of the same make, model, fuel, year and mileage.

How PawnMeter helps

After the checks, the clerk enters make, model, year, kilometres and fuel. PawnMeter shows the median of comparable real sales, or says there is no price.

PawnMeter: Type the item. PawnMeter shows the resale price and a suggested loan, calculated only from what comparable items really sold for. When there is not enough data, it says so instead of guessing.
