How to explain a pawn offer to the customer
Short answer: tell the customer where the number comes from, in three parts: what comparable items really sold for, the condition you graded, and the percentage your shop lends. A customer who understands the offer is more likely to accept it and to come back, even when the number is lower than hoped.
Why customers distrust offers
Customers often check an online listing before they come in and expect that price. When the offer is far lower and the clerk cannot explain it, the customer assumes the shop is taking advantage.
The three-part explanation
- What it sells for. "Phones like this one have recently sold for around this much." Real sales, not listings.
- Its condition. "Yours has a scratch on the screen and the battery is weaker, so I graded it good, not very good."
- Our percentage. "We lend this share of the resale price, because we take the risk of having to sell it."
For gold, show the arithmetic
Weight, karat, the official reference price of the day and your percentage. A customer can follow the calculation and see that the gold was valued fairly.
Listings versus real sales
If the customer mentions a listing, explain kindly that a listing is what someone hopes to get, and that many never sell at that price. The real sale price is what matters for a loan.
Keep it consistent
The explanation only works if every clerk uses the same numbers. Two different explanations for the same item damage trust more than no explanation.
How PawnMeter helps
PawnMeter shows the resale price, the range, the actual sales behind it and the suggested loan at your percentage, so the clerk can show the customer the basis of the offer on the screen.
PawnMeter: Type the item. PawnMeter shows the resale price and a suggested loan, calculated only from what comparable items really sold for. When there is not enough data, it says so instead of guessing.
